Archives for Learning and Education Section Annual Meeting - 7th September 2015

Dear ALES members

I would like to invite you to attend the ALES annual meeting on Monday 7 September 2015.

Before the meeting Andrew Payne, Head of Education and Outreach at The National Archives, will deliver a paper on Magna Carta – Foundation of Liberty or Scribble on a Page?

The annual meeting is an opportunity to find out what ALES has achieved in the past year, to approve the plans and budget bid for 2015/16 and to elect the committee for the next year. It’s also a chance to meet up with other archivists with a particular interest in education and outreach, to build networks and, most importantly, to contribute to and influence the work of the ALES group.

We (the current committee) will be inviting ALES members to get involved, by joining the committee or suggesting ideas for training, development and other work that you would like ALES to lead on your behalf.

Please find attached a list of the ALES committee members. Members are invited to volunteer for any of these posts. The Chair and Web Officer are standing down this year. We already have a volunteer to take over as chair but we will be needing some ‘new blood’, ideas and enthusiasm as well. We are happy to consider creating new committee roles to meet particular interests!

ARA has been revising its guidance for voluntary officers and I suggest that if you are interested in joining the committee, you have a look at the Handbook for Voluntary Officers (also attached). The biggest change from the revision is the introduction of a fixed term of office. If you are interested in joining the committee, please let us know. You can contact any of the current officers to ask for more information.

This exciting event will take place in Room 2 of Friends House, 173 Euston Road, London, NW1 2BJ on the 7 September 2015, starting at 9.30 a.m. and finishing by 12.30 p.m.

This event is free of charge for ARA members. There is a charge of £5 for non-ARA members.

Teaching and Learning in the Digital Age

Heritage Quay, University of Huddersfield, 5^th June 2015

The nature of teaching and learning has traditionally focused on the transmission model: the passing of knowledge or information from educators to students. However, new and emerging technologies have challenged this approach by emphasising the quality of knowledge and how it is acquired, and also by fostering more participative and collaborative methods of teaching and learning.

Archive services across the UK are contributing to this transformation by embracing digital and online technology to create, share and disseminate knowledge and information more widely, and to engage with different groups of users and learners including schools, university students, adult learners and community groups.

This one-day conference would like to explore how archivists, education and outreach officers, and other professionals working in the heritage sector are responding to the challenges and opportunities presented by online and digital learning, particularly at a time of significant financial constraints in the sector. Questions that we wish to cover on the day include:

• how can archive services support digital learning?

• to what extent has digital learning improved access and changed perceptions about archives?

• what skillsets and resources are required to engage in digital learning?

• what can archive professionals learn from teachers and educators who use digital technology in the classroom?

• how can the archives and education professions exchange good practice and ideas?

We are inviting 30 minute presentations focusing on practical experiences and case studies around these topics. If you are interested please email Maria Castrillo, ALES training officer (m.castrillo@nls.uk), an abstract with an outline of your proposal.

The deadline for submissions is 20th March. Once all submissions have been received a small committee will meet to review them and make a selection.

ALES Edition of ARA: Request for articles

The ALES (Archives for Learning and Education Section)  issue of ARC will be published in June 2015. We would like to include a range of articles featuring work undertaken by  archivists throughout the country, in partnership and alone, with funding and on a minimal budget, with pre-school, schools, adults and community groups – and ideally representing work being done in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. We are particularly interested in articles about innovative projects that showcase new approaches to education work.

Please send your proposed article, with images and captions to Emma Peattie (emma.peattie@westlothian.gov.uk) and I will collate and, if necessary, select articles for this edition of ARC. We also have a ALES blog. If we receive large numbers of articles, some of these may be edited for inclusion in the blog. Content needs to be received by me by 2 March 2015 at the latest.

Articles should be between 400 and 800 words and, where possible, images should accompany the text.  As a general guide, 400 words plus an image will fill a page (c.625 words without an image to a page).

Images should have a resolution of no less than 300dpi and in TIFF or JPEG format. Any copyright questions should be  resolved so that we know we can safely reproduce the image (copyright forms can be supplied as required). All images should have a caption, source and acknowledgement.

BBC Get Creative: What's the future of education?

 Get Creative is a new, public-facing, year long campaign led by the BBC together with many other partners. It aims to raise the profile of arts, culture and creativity, to highlight their central place in all our lives and to celebrate where they happen all over the nation. We (Cultural Learning Alliance) want to showcase the fantastic power of cultural learning to inspire creativity and innovation.

engage Scotland: Developing or Updating your Child Protection Policy Training Workshop

An engage Scotland training workshop delivered by Children in Scotland Tuesday 24 March 2015 DCA, 152 Nethergate, Dundee, DD1 4DY This one day workshop offers training on developing or updating organisational child protection policies based on the Creative Scotland/Children in Scotland Creating Safety publication. This workshop is aimed at anyone working in galleries, visual arts organisations, museums and heritage venues with responsibility for child protection. Having an effective child protection policy can help to create a child-safe organisation. A robust child protection policy should ensure that children and young people are safe and protected from abuse and exploitation and that staff are aware of risk factors, able to recognise signs of abuse and confident in dealing with any risks or allegations that they may encounter. The overriding aim must be to protect children from risk and abuse and to ensure that they enjoy learning experiences, but protection of staff and organisations are also key factors. Participants at this training workshop will gain a basic understanding of what is required when creating or updating their own child protection policy as well as advice on where to locate further information and support. By attending you will be able to:  - Develop your skills and knowledge  - Share your own practice  - Build contacts and network  - Discuss child protection issues that can arise in gallery and museum settings in working with challenging artwork or exhibitions and collections and young people. Numbers at the workshop are limited to 20 so please book early to make sure of a place. Access to Archives for Disabled People

We are planning to hold a free workshop on accessibility on Friday 17 April at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives, London.

The workshop is aimed at archivists, special collections and outreach staff who are looking for ways to improve access to their collections for disabled people.

We will present a case study of our Out of the Box project (www.outoftheboxproject.org) recently funded by the Arts Council, to share lessons learned with colleagues in the archives sector. I am looking to expand the lineup of speakers, and would like to hear from any colleagues within the cultural heritage sector who have delivered similar projects or who have specific arrangements in place for disabled audiences to access their (document-centric) collections -- particularly if you would like to share and discuss your work with the assembled group.
